Guest Review – Charlie Banana mama cloth

I’ve worked with the ladies at All About Baby Boutique in the past on a few reviews and giveaways. I have to say that they are very knowledgeable when it comes to cloth diapers and other natural parenting items. Their customer service is top of the line and it seems they are always looking for ways to help educate their customers and provide them with exactly what they need!
I recently contacted All About Baby Boutique regarding reusable feminine pads. Now, before you stop reading, and click to another review, let me tell you that if you have not jumped on the band-wagon of reusable feminine pads, then might I say, you are living in the dark ages! :) These pads are so awesome and they are so much better for you when compared to commercial tampons or pads (which contain harmful chemicals such as dioxins which are a known carcinogen)! Who wants to put stuff like that next to their crown jewels? Not me!!
Priscilla, from All About Baby Boutique graciously offered to send me a 3 pack of the Charlie Banana reusable feminine pads, size super for me to review. This is what I received:
The top side of the pad (that rests against your skin):
The bottom side of the pad (that rests against your undies):
Here is some information for you regarding Charlie Banana reusable feminine pads (taken from All About Baby Boutique’s website):
Charlie Banana Feminine Pads
That is surely something you did not want to talk about with your girlfriends or others. Times have changed. The truth is periods are periods and they arrive as expected most of the time. We live in a modern age and the majority of us wear tampons and different types of chemicals loaded pads. Not so long ago toxic shock syndrome scared us all!
We all heard about it, read about it and we carried on…
Reusable pads have always existed but were not very fashionable just like cloth diapers … what a shame. Reusable pads are a delight!
Comfortable like you would not believe, stain free, chemical free, stylish and cute, super convenient, eco friendly and economical. We gave many samples to friends and they all looked at us in a funny way at first. I must admit it was often a joke among new employees. But after everyone tried, the votes were conclusive: A Winner.
They all love them and were convinced they were the coolest things. Try them and we can assure you that you will never go back.
Charlie Banana™ is the perfect starter kit for a young girl having her first period. Why not give a daughter the proper start!
•Charlie Banana™ Innovative washable feminine pads are very comfortable and stylish. A must try for every women.
•They are perfume free, chlorine free, and free from chemicals.
•Choose your ideal absorbency; Panty liner, Regular, and Super.
•They are Unbelievably Stain free. A perfect gift for any young girl.
•A fabulous selection of colours to choose from.”
Now, I asked for the super Charlie Banana pads because I tend to have a heavy flow the first few days of my cycle! I used these pads and I cannot tell you how much I LOVE them!
I love that they are all-in-one pads (there is no having to stack liners to increase absorbency) and there is no unstuffing, which means that you don’t have touch a bloody pad on wash day. Oh, that’s another thing…. wash day! Well, I keep all my soiled pads in a wet bag until wash day, unless I wash mid-cycle! Then I dump all the pads into the washing machine, fill the washing machine with cold water and let them soak for about an hour (I’ve even forgotten about them and left them overnight)! Then I rinse the cold water out, then run a hot wash cycle with some Rockin Green Femme Rock! These pads came out soft, fluffy and totally clean! You would think that something that has been soaked in blood would be prone to stains, but so far, I’ve used these twice and I have had no problems with stains!
So if you currently use reusable pads or you are curious and want to give them a try, this is a great time for you to enter the #GIVEAWAY!!
All About Baby Boutique has generously offered one of you the chance to win a Charlie Banana reusable feminine pad panty liners 3-pack in lavender a $15.88 value!! *Open to US and Canada*

Thoughts For Thursday: The Great Cloth Diaper Change

logot

Join us on April 21st, 2012 as we attempt to break the world record for the most cloth diapers changed at one time!

This world record attempt is a great way to show the world how many people are already choosing and using reusable cloth diapers successfully. But there are still a lot of people who don’t know about cloth diapers. If you want to help spread the word about cloth diapers, please join the Real Diaper Association, the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that advocates for the use of reusable cloth diapers.

Register here, so we’ll be sure to have enough record keepers!

Why Cloth Diapers?

Reusable cloth diapers have many benefits, including:

  • Environmental: Cloth diapers reduce waste for families with children in diapers by more than 50%.
  • Financial: Cloth diapers allow families to save more than $2000 per child.
  • Health: Cloth diapers help parents reduce exposure of their babies’ skin and lungs to the chemicals in disposable diapers.
  • Cute and comfortable: Parents love putting soft cloth diapers, available in a variety of styles and patterns, on their babies.
  • Convenient: Once you’ve purchased your stash, no more weekly trips to the store to purchase more – simply put a load in the laundry!

Can’t join us for the world record attempt, but still want to help?

To support cloth diaper advocacy efforts, please become a member of the Real Diaper Association. Donations to fund the Real Diaper Association’s cloth diaper advocacy work are also gratefully accepted here.

More About The Great Cloth Diaper Change

  • 2012:  We’re looking forward to breaking the records that were set in 2011 on Saturday, April 21, 2012! The Great Cloth Diaper Change will be the grand finale of the International Cloth Diaper Awareness Week, April 16 to 21, 2012.
  • 2011: A Guinness World Record was set for the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously with 5,026 participants at 127 locations in 5 countries. The total number of participating hosts (not all qualified for the GWR) reporting were 203 with 6,363 participants from 10 countries!  $5,167 was donated to the Real Diaper Association.
  • History:  Judy Aagard’s desire to celebrate Earth Day by hosting a family event for the Tiny Tots community quickly morphed into a dream to set a Guinness World Record for the most cloth diapers changed simultaneously.  Shortly thereafter, The Great Cloth Diaper ChangeSM 2011 was conceived and organized by a small group of cloth diaper enthusiasts that were eager to demonstrate that cloth diapers are a real option for today’s families.
The initial plan was to develop an infrastructure for any cloth diapering fan in North America to be able to get involved in, either as a participant or an organizer. Word quickly traveled across the oceans and it was soon evident that cloth diapering has a formidable following not just in North America but around the world. Several countries hosted GCDC 2011 locations even though for some it meant getting up in the middle of the night to do so.

Cloth diapering is alive and well!  More to come as our story unfolds!

Tasteful Tuesday: Cooking with Kids – Mini Frittatas

The amazing thing about making mini frittatas (which is the technical term for them) is that there is no wrong way to do it!  I love recipes like that!!  So, without further adu, here we go!

Preheat the oven to 350.  Grease a muffin tray (I used a half dozen tray) in your favorite way to grease (I took the easy route and used cooking spray).

Beat 5 eggs and about a third of a cup of milk together.  For a richer taste, use cream.  We never have cream on hand but we do have half and half so I used that.  Set aside.

Now for the fun, kid-friendly part.  I put out all the ingredients that could be added to the egg mixture.

We had -

  • chopped spinach
  • cooked bacon that I crumbled
  • cut up ham
  • cooked link sausage cut up
  • onions
  • three different kinds of grated cheeses (I used parmasan, crumbled feta, and grated cheddar)
  • chopped bell peppers

You can, of course, add (or subtract) whatever you have on hand that you think would be wonderful in your eggs.  I then let sweet pea fill the muffin tin with her own assortment of the above ingredients.  My only stipulation was that she couldn’t fill it more than half way up the tray.  She had a great time adding and ‘decorating’ (as she called it) each little muffin hole.  Once she was done, I poured the egg mixture over each of her ‘creations’ (filled about two thirds to three fourths of the way up) and stuck them in the oven for about 20 minutes.

Out came a wonderful dinner that was made in less than half an hour and, best of all, sweet pea got to enjoy the fruits of her labor! :)   It was delicious and a crowd favorite!

PS – sorry for the iPhone pic – my camera is broken. :/

Thoughts for Thursday: Spanish Splash (Guest Post)

Spanish Splash:  Being Bilingual Makes You Smarter…Not Just Friendlier, More Global-minded, and Better Prepared to Get a Job

Dora, Diego, Handy Manny, and Rosita…From Nick Jr. to Disney Jr. to Sesame Street…everywhere that you look on children’s television there seems to be an explosion of characters speaking Spanish and teaching Spanish vocabulary to young children (or even other languages such as seen on Ni-hao, Kailan).  I even saw an article in a recent pop culture magazine talking about how celebrities like Sandra Bullock is enrolling her adopted child in an international school so that he can become trilingual!! Why?  What’s the big deal with this new “language fad” anyway?  Why should I introduce my toddler or my preschooler to Spanish…this is America, right?  We speak English here, right?  My toddler is having a hard enough time learning to speak English properly, right?  Won’t Spanish (or any other language) just confuse him/her?  WRONG!!! WRONG!!!  WRONG!!!  WRONG!!!  WRONG!!! WRONG!!! WRONG!!! WRONG!!! WRONG!!!

Early childhood is actually the best time to learn a second language according to current brain research.  From birth until the around the age of seven, the human brain is best able to learn and replicate a variety of sounds.  Think of the brain as having a bunch of different windows inside of it.  One of those windows is a “Language Window.”  At birth that” Language Window” is wide open and your brain is receptive to learning any language and its sounds.  That’s why children who grow up in bilingual or multilingual families from a very young age can learn to speak in more than one language with ease.  Our human brains are designed to absorb and learn language early on much like a sponge.  However, if you try to put an older child in a bilingual or multilingual household, they will have a much more difficult time learning a new language.  By the time, a child reaches age 7, that “Language Window” has started closing.

Here’s another way to look at it:  The human brain is like a fresh can of Playdough! When you first open it (at birth), it’s soft and malleable and you can make almost anything with it.  However, over time (past toddlerhood and early childhood) it hardens and it cracks and it becomes a stubborn hard lump that becomes extremely difficult to mold (i.e. teach a new language), especially if you leave your Playdough sitting out unattended.  Don’t let your child’s Playdough brain get all hard and mushy without first sticking some second language experiences in there!!  LOL

Unfortunately, in most places in our country, our children don’t start becoming exposed to a second language until high school or college.  Not that it is impossible to learn a language at this age, but it is much more difficult to retain and to speak with native-like fluency.  Those of you who have taken a foreign language in high school, how many of you remember much of what you learned after however many semesters of taking that language?  Better yet, how many of you can actually speak the language that you studied?  And for the couple of you that said that you can speak the foreign language that you studied, how many of you can speak with native-like fluency or do you have an accent that distinguishes you as a “gringo” as soon as you open your mouth? Can you roll your R’s like a native Spanish Speaker? Can you make that phlegmy sound in the back of your throat like a native French speaker?   Probably not!!

A recent article in the NY Times states that “Being bilingual, it turns out, makes you smarter.” (http://www.nytimes.com/2012/03/18/opinion/sunday/the-benefits-of-bilingualism.html?_r=1&src=me&ref=general)

More specifically, research shows that children who learn a second language:

  • score higher results on standardized tests
  • develop greater cognitive skills such as creativity and problem-solving
  • have enhanced listening and memory skills
  • have greater career choices & opportunities later in life
  • develop an openness to & appreciation of other cultures

Maybe by now you are thinking, “Well, I want my kids to be even smarter than the little geniuses already are…but I don’t speak another language myself!”  Have no fear!!! There are plenty of language immersion programs available all over the country.  Just use Google to find one.  And if you live in (or near) the Piedmont Triad area (Greensboro, High Point, and Winston-Salem), you can enroll your child today in Spanish Splash, our unique and fun Spanish-Immersion classes specifically designed for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers.  We are just starting our Spring Session this week and you are welcome to join us.   So don’t wait another day, “Immerse yourself! Splash into Spanish today!”   For more information about second language learning or to enroll in a class, please visit our website at www.playtimegso.com.   Hasta luego!

Tasteful Tuesday: Homemade Easter Egg Dye

So, I was researching about how to dye Easter eggs…without food coloring!  I think there are some awesome dye suggestions here from healthiertalk.com that are all natural and fun for kiddos.

Plant-based dyes for coloring Easter eggs provide a synthetic-free and bug-free alternative and their muted yet vibrant colors are far lovelier than their counterparts. Children seem to find that mashing food is also much more fun that simply dropping a tablet in a cup. As well, it is a great lesson in creativity and exploring which plant materials works in which way.

Some materials work best when they are boiled with the eggs (as noted below), and some work well made ahead and used for dipping or soaking the eggs. If you use juice, just use it undiluted. The longer you let the eggs soak, the more intense the color will be (for the boiled versions, you can remove them from the heat and allow to cool in the dye bath).

You can use your favorite egg-dying tricks here as well: Like crayons for a batik effect or rubber bands for a tie-dye effect. If you like a glossy egg, you can rub the dyed eggs with vegetable oil when they are dry.

Freebie Friday: Birth Circles

Did you see Kaiya’s Story yesterday?  It is such a great story of how wonderful birth can be!

Today, we’d like to share with you about a group that meets at All About Baby.   The Triad Birth Circle meets in our Education Center and is reaching out to moms, from pregnancy forward.  TBC is headed up by three very passionate birth doulas in the Triad, NC area, Chelsea Gehrken, Jessica Pace, and Bridget Riley. This is a meetup for women in all stages of life to come together and talk about birth. Our main goal is EMPOWERMENT of women through positive stories, support, and encouragement.

This group meets every other Friday at 5:30 pm at All About Baby (410 Blandwood Ave, Greensboro, NC).  All moms are welcome!

Not local?  We encourage you to find a birth support group in your area.  Your local hospital or birth center may have a similar group.  If you are unable to locate a group, you can search postpartum.net.  They educate family, friends and healthcare providers so that moms and moms-to-be can get the support they need and recover after birth.

Thoughts for Thursday: Kaiya’s Story (Guest Post)

Today’s post, a birth story, is from one of our local mamas.  Thank you for sharing your story with us :)

Want to share your birth story on our blog?  Submit it to sheresa@allaboutbabyboutique.com.  We are posting one story a month, to celebrate our mamas, babies, and all births.  We’d love to hear your story!

Kaiya’s Story

My entire second pregnancy (or just about) was a very different adventure than my first. I was much sicker, I craved protein instead of carbs, and I contracted every day from about 8 weeks on.  As my due date got closer and closer my contractions got more and more powerful. I felt teased every single day not knowing if they were turning into the real thing or not.

On February 13, I started having much more intense contractions starting right when I got up, but they were very infrequent and didn’t last long. Toward evening they picked up some speed, maybe every 5-7 minutes lasting about 50 seconds…not that I was counting. :) I knew I wanted to get some rest, so I took some Bach’s Rescue Remedy, a warm shower, and got into bed. It was hard to sleep, but I did rest between contractions, which had slowed to be about every 10-15 minutes. I was using my breathing techniques and relaxation techniques that I had worked so hard on the past 9 months. I felt great.

By morning, I wanted to get the show more on the road, and I felt like sitting around at home wasn’t going to cut it. So we took Toren to preschool, Erik moved his work schedule around, and we hit the grocery stores. We walked every single aisle at two very large grocery stores and my contractions starting being pretty intense and coming every 4-5 minutes. I used my techniques I’d practiced and the walking made it bearable. Even when we got to the car, I’d have Erik pull over (when possible) so I could walk out each contraction. I even walked at the parking lot at one of Erik’s dealerships where he needed to stop. When we reached home, they were about 1-2 minutes apart and lasting a pretty long time.  I called the midwife to come.

I was going to try to make lasagna so that I could keep moving through my contractions – sitting still made them a million times worse. However I couldn’t even get the ingredients out without having contractions I had to work through. So I decided to go ahead and get in my bathtub for some relaxation (I hoped). My contractions did slow (though they were just as intense) when I got in the tub, and Erik had to go pick up Toren from school, so I was alone until the midwife arrived.

I welcomed the time alone to center myself. I was really feeling like I couldn’t do this much longer…I was trying to find a more comfortable position when I heard a knock on the door. I soon realized Erik had accidentally left the front door locked. I waited for the current contraction to pass and then I called the midwife. I had her check for another door and eventually got her in. She came in and I told her how discouraged I was feeling…how this was a dumb idea to think I could do this…and that I knew I was probably only 3 cm with days of labor left to go. Erik arrived home with Toren but I didn’t want Toren coming in and making me close up, so the midwife asked Erik to keep Toren away from me and to get him down for his nap.

I started getting the shakes and feeling nauseated. I was just so down. I got out of the tub for a change and the contractions that ensued were back to back. This entire time I had been calm during my surges – counting, singing, breathing, visualizing, etc. When I got out of the tub I definitely started the traditional moaning you hear laboring women do. I was really getting disheartened and I was so tired.  I told the midwife I just wanted to lie down and rest a while. So I got in my bed and peacefully slept for about 5 minutes. Then I woke up to a doozie of a contraction. It felt different than other ones. Then all of a sudden, midcontraction, my belly pushed!!! I honestly had zero control and there burst my water!

The midwife was shocked. She didn’t think it was very likely I was at this stage because of how lucid and calm I was. She started scrambling to get set up and called the assistant midwife to come stat! We got Erik from Toren’s bedroom. After 37 minutes of pushing, Kaiya was born with her hand presenting with her head! 9 lbs 1 oz and a hand! And I did it!!! Before I could even pick her up I looked at the midwife and said – I did it.

I held her on my chest and she was pink and breathing easily. She promptly peed and pooped.  After a few minutes we checked to see if she was a girl or boy. Erik made the discovery. We were delighted! It took us about 45 minutes to settle on a name.

I can’t believe she was born after only 4.5 hours of active labor. The birth was so gentle she didn’t really even cry. She started getting sleepy around 4 (she was born at 2:37),  so Erik held her while Toren looked on, and I took a shower.  Toren had amazingly slept through the whole thing and had just woken up to join us. What a surprise for him!  Then I snuggled down in bed with my new little bundle. No IVs, no pushy doctors, no epidural, no unneccesary meds, not even one exam. Kaiya came in her own time and way (hand up!).  Not to mention no NICU!

I really wanted to accomplish this and I did. I love how this all turned out. I don’t necessarily feel like superwoman like some people do post partum…but I do feel so empowered to have accomplished a goal I’d worked so hard on for so very long. A goal I came very close to giving up on.

I’m a new mama in my late 20′s trying to find the balance between being a career woman, mom, wife and daughter. It’s not easy, and  something has to give. In my opinion, my relationships are not optional. So what gives?

The answer remains to be seen, and I invite you to read along on my journey through motherhood.

Tasteful Tuesday: Crock Pot Chicken Tortilla Soup

All I can say is yum!  We live by our crock pot some days, and this recipe is as easy as it is delicious.  Hope you love it too :)

Chicken Tortilla Soup

2 cans Tomato Sauce
2 cans black beans
1 can corn
1 cup of salsa
2 cans of Diced Tomatoes
3 Chicken Breasts

Tortilla Chips and Mexican Cheese

Add all ingredients into crockpot and let cook for 6 hours on low. Take the chicken out and cut it up into bite size pieces and put back in. When serving we crush tortilla chips into the bottom of a bowl and then put soup on top and top with mexican cheese.
