Tell us a little about yourself and how you got started with Salsa Babies.
I am originally from Malaysia, and had an extensive background in rhythmic gymnastic, where I’d competed and eventually became an instructor. I’ve picked up various dances since ranging from Jazz, ballet and
belly dancing. Since coming to the states, getting married and having my daugther (Suria), I’ve kept up with the dancing world. It has been tough since the birth of Suria, so I started looking into options I can do with dancing and being able to be with my baby. I came across Salsa Babies, and instantly fell in love. It was perfect for us, since I’ve been passionate about babywearing since the birth of Suria and being able to wear her and dance instantly click with me.
What do you love about teaching Salsa Babies?
I love teaching Salsa Babies because I would love for other moms in the community to reap the benefits of babywearing as well as dancing your way to fitness!
What do you think moms benefit from the most during a Salsa Babies series?
Salsa Babies series is meant to be fun and sexy for new moms and their baby. Having a baby is such wonderful event and it’s important to engage back to the world thereafter to prevent post partum depression. A lot of times, new moms often don’t feel sexy or seem to lost their feminine side after having a baby, so being able to express that during the stimulating dance series as well as losing the baby fat while being able to connect with your baby while wearing your baby definitely proofs to be beneficial for new moms.
Tell us about the moves that you teach? Can you give us an example of a basic dance step?
The class is for all levels of experience ranging from beginners all the way to pro. For the beginners, all steps will be broken down slowly and repetitively. For the pros, they can go on and add the hips as well as hands movement. Salsa babies series will cover merengue, basic salsa, fast salsa, cha cha cha and bachata. A lot of you may not know what all those movements are, but I can assure you they are all unique in their own way. For example merengue focus on the hips movement while the legs are moved into tempo, without bouncing up and down on the upper part of the body. Then there are tons of variations with merengue that will make up a fun dance in a group.
How do babies do in the classes?
All the babies that have gone through salsa babies definitely enjoy them. They benefit from the marvelous music, stimulating maracas we have during the class as well as the exciting movement while being worn safely in a baby carrier.
What is the one piece of advice you’d give a new mom?
Nobody is a perfect mom, it’s ok to let the dust sit while you cuddle your baby!
Fill in the blank. Being a mom is ____the best God given gift to mankind_________.
